Made in response to the fic "Fallout Equestria". I don't want to type any spoilers that may ruin this fic for those who wish to read it, but basically Kkat took the story in a direction different from the one I'd wished. This, combined with my stubborn refusal to accept the decisions one makes with his or her own creative work conceived this image.

I'm with the other Homage fans on this one.  The whole idea of Little Pip's crush on Velvet was to show how innocent Pip was from Stable life.  She had developed an idealized image of what Velvet was without even talking to her for more then a passing hello.  Velvet turned out to be much more then Pip imagined, and losing those feelings (though she still had to admit Velvet was a sexy mare) was an important part of Pip's growing up.  From where I'm sitting, this completely undermines Velvet as a character and takes weight away from Little Pip's journey.

That's interesting; I don't think I ever really expected them to become a pair at any point in the story. Most of Littlepip's actions didn't help in that, either.
It would have made sense to me later on (as Velvet's character developed and changed), but by then, she was already paired up with Calamity.

I like Homage more personally, she's got more of a fun attitude IMO. And come on, who didn't love that radio broadcast? :icondashlolplz:
Besides that, I absolutely love the look on Lilpip here! Fantastic work.

Perfect. This just solved the one frustration I had with the story, at least, for now... until Kkat addresses it again. (or doesn't)

Not saying I want to see shipping, but it bothered me that Pip doesn't even get a kiss for all of the teasing that Velvet put her through in the past few chapters...

I know exactly how you feel, it still hurts me when Calamity and Velvet act as a couple in any way, even though LittlePip doesn't seem to care anymore... Reading the latest chapters has been a little painful, having to accept that nothing is going to happen between them.

I don't really get this pairing... spoilers!!

I mean, Velvet was said not to have her barn door swing this way, and she never showed any interest in Littlepip that way, and poor Pip knew it. The whole point was that the actual Velvet didn't live up to the standards of VoiceOnTheRadio!Velvet. One scene that stands out was when Littlepip angrily berates her: "You're too smart to NOT know that I have a crush on you" when Velvet made a rather transparent pass at Pip to get at Calamity. Bitch!Velvet is not a fun mare, which is why I'm glad that side of her has gone into hibernation as of late in favor of maternal!Velvet.

Still, wonderful image here, you're a talented artist.

Keep in mind that comment was made by Pip's mother, the only individual who truly knew which way that barn door swings is Velvet. Any attempts of mine to convince you that Velvet and Lilpip would have been a better pairing will most likely be fruitless- heck! It's worth a shot (SPOILERS) Anyway, here's what I think: In the beginning, Lilpip explains her crush on Velvet to the reader. She feels such strong emotions, but Velvet far surpasses herself in beauty and popularity, and in Pip's mind, they could never be together. Velvet then leaves the stable for unknown reasons, causing Pip, fueled by her love for Velvet, to venture out of her comfortable home and into the wild wasteland. If I were told at this point in the story that Pip's new friend Calamity, described as an "aesthetic" stallion would swoop in and, in a matter of weeks "fall in love" with Velvet and have sex with her, I could have stopped there and saved myself alot of effort. Instead, I kept reading. During the trio's travels together, Lilpip frequently gets bad cases of the butterflies around Velvet, we've all felt it: weak legs, pounding heart, absolute inability to speak, just totally dumbstruck over her feelings for this mare. Now just as Pip had expected, instead of returning her feelings she simply teased. Velvet, the peace loving pony and Calamity, the recklessly violent pony have completely opposing philosophies. Remember near the beginning of the story when Velvet sang the song she had made about Lilpip's selfless acts of bravery? I'm expected to believe this pony would fall in love with a stallion who never considers peaceful alternatives, preferring to solve complications only by slaying other ponies? It isn't a yin and yang relationship, it's a Dharma Buddist and a... reckless killer? I don't know, in short, it's shit. It felt like they just hooked up because it was easy and the puzzle pieces fit together. Pip and Velvet had a discussion (part of the one you quoted) where Velvet explained that she hated Calamity and his confrontational nature, and that she never wanted to be with him, even though it seemed he was the only alternative. She also said a bit that I think we both remember right before the text you quoted above, which may have essentially disproved what pip's alcoholic mother mumbled to her about barn doors. I read stories not just to feel, but to feel good. I want to escape harsh reality in favor of a full narrative with closure. The story I started reading and loved became a mess, Calamity and Velvet's... thing only meets fruition in the third act, the setup between Velvet and Lilpip lasts until halfway through the second act, where Homage is introduced. Homage's character hadn't even been developed when Pip got involved with her, and it all just felt like a ultimately unsatisfying hodgepodge of bad. I don't enjoy drawing shipping pictures like this one. I drew this out of a deep respect and love of story and it's awesome power. I drew this to finish what Kkat had started (or rather form it into what I wanted it to be) and most of all, I drew this for closure in my own mind. Sorry for that big long rant there. It's funny, everything you said in your comment is absolutely true. Stories have a different effect on each reader, and this one had a rather powerful effect on me. I empathized with Lilpip perhaps a bit more than I should have. Alot of it was just the hatred of the pairing of Calamity and Velvet. I think after all she'd been through, Lilpip deserves to be with the VoiceOnTheRadio!Velvet.

Dear sweet mother of wall of text...

-_-;; Wow, okay, that wall of text was really hard to read...

But I get what you're saying. I disagree with your reasoning but I do understand your perspective.

The tricky thing about Homage is, she's DJ Pon3. Reading her broadcasts in hindsight gives her character much more depth: Littlepip was already hanging onto her every word when she discovered someone speaking out for good and justice in the Wasteland, and Homage was keenly listening for every last detail of the Stable Dweller she could find. Only, we all thought Homage was a stallion so we never considered what would happen when they met. Littlepip certainly didn't, but Homage had slowly been falling for her as she heard of her exploits. That's why the relationship moved so swiftly, because Homage knew from the beginning what she wanted, she just needed to make sure Littlepip was the hero she had been hoping she would be.

The discussion Velvet and Pip had, in which she stated how much she hated him, was after a major conflict rose between them at a crucial moment where Calamity chose to end a threat that Velvet wanted to save. Killing the raider colt was one of Calamity's darkest acts of the story, is it any wonder why Velvet would lash out at him as a result? In that moment, Calamity was incorrigible in her eyes. And the bit where she made a pass at Pip, that was a transparent plot to get at Calamity - get on Littlepip's good side, turn Pip against him. It was a bitch move, one that Pip quickly squashed, and it was one of Velvet's darker moments, when she showed her potential for being a horrible person indeed (keep in mind, I love this mare, so I'm not insulting her here - the heat of her emotions blinded her from the long term damage she could be doing to Pip).

As for Velvet and Calamity getting together, well, they pretty much said it was their mutual platonic love for Littlepip that brought them together - Velvet saw Calamity only as a reckless killer at first, aghast that he had almost killed Littlepip on their first encounter. Calamity saw her as a burden, trying to use diplomacy and pacifism in a world which tears the weak apart. But Calamity's dedication to Littlepip's safety struck a chord with Velvet's concerns over her health, and vice versa. Pip's drug problems united them together in order to help their friend, but this time it was Velvet who chose to shoot first and ask forgiveness later. That's part of the reason Velvet began to see things from Calamity's perspective, when it's best to use force to guarantee your loved ones will survive rather than try to talk things through.

The story doesn't decide 'oh, turns out they're perfectly suited to one another'. Calamity and Velvet simply reach a point where they trust and understand one another, where feelings inside of themselves have space to bloom between them and apparently they decide to give it a shot. All of the moments and teases before it was brought out in the open in the return to Stable 2 was actually Littlepip getting the wrong idea of their relationship. She was so convinced that they were already an item, that it actually made them consider it as a possibility. It's not a fairytale, they still have a lot of issues they need to work through, but they're being mature and working together on them.

I think the 'barn door' comment was made when Littlepip was a little filly, and I'm pretty sure it was said in the presence of other mares, friends of her mother, so Pip's mother was probably lucid at that point. That comment was more to highlight how thoughtless and distant a mother she was, rather than just being an alcoholic.

And without a doubt, Littlepip deserves to be with her dreammare, VoiceOnTheRadio!Velvet, but part of Velvet's characterization is that she's different than what others perceived her to be, Pip included. her leaving the Stable embodies this. VoiceOnTheRadio!Velvet was just that, a voice, a dream Pip had, and part of the point behind Velvet and Pip's interaction has been that the true Velvet is somepony quite different from who she expected. She's far, far from perfect, and it was a bitter pill for Pip to swallow. Losing that innocence is quite a tragedy for her to bear, so I can understand how you would be put off by the story once the penny dropped because of your empathy for her.

It certainly wasn't a fairytale. Honestly when it comes to love stories I prefer a fairytale ending over a realistic one. Fallout:Equestria wasn't a love story, But I thought it was, and that thought stuck with me perhaps longer than it should have. (spoilers again)

In Fallout 3, the player must escape his vault dwelling and find his father. Of course there are a million side quests and a huge open world, but that's the beginning of the storyline. I figured that, like Fallout 3, Pip would have to find Velvet and based on what was disclosed in the first chapter they would fall in love. Instead, Pip and Calamity find her, and poor Pip has to hide her feelings from Velvet as the more compatible (at least physically) Calamity grew closer and closer to her. Seeing this unfold was very hard for me to bear, I would have rather seen Pip and Velvet fall in love. That seems right.

haha, no problem.

Anyway, I've said all that I can on the matter. I hope you're still reading the story, and that this direction of their relationship hasn't turned you off. That would be a shame.

Velvet's characterization was to be a free spirit, one who isn't bound by Stable 2's preconceptions of her. The crush LittlePip had was founded on those preconceptions. That's the tricky thing about a 1st POV narrative, we only see the other characters through the tinted glasses of the viewpoint character. Camality and Velvet weren't getting closer and closer to each other from the get go, that was Pip assuming they were and going into despair about it. Velvet does love LittlePip very dearly, and it breaks her heart to see her getting hurt, but objectively speaking, she's never shown any romantic interest in mares.

have you read chapter 20.5? It fleshes out Homage and LittlePip's dynamic extremely well. It's written by another author, yes, but Kkat made it canon.

That's right, their growing closer and closer only started much later, do you remember when? It may have been around chapter nineteen or something
Actually, the direction it went did turn me off, but what you wrote has made me consider continuing to read sometime in the future. Chapter thirty-one was the last chapter I read. Kkat asked us in doc chat for suggestions on how and where to put Velvet and Calamity's... scene in the next chapter, I told her that instead of continuing to read, I'd have to create Sander Cohen-esque art! We had a bit of a discussion and I told her I couldn't read anymore of the fic and why. She said it was too bad that I decided to stop. I then asked people to send me shipping pictures for reference since I had none, and Kkat sent a couple pictures. They were... interesting.
I skimmed chapter 20.5, it was much more cloppy than I'd expected. I mostly read the surprising amount of dialogue in that chapter and tried to just skim the rest, like that whole bit with the device they were using? That was pretty strange, didn't expect that at all. Just yesterday I started reading "It's a Dangerous Business Going Out Your Door". It's so good. The dialogue so far is fantastic, which is rare these days. There are so many older fics I want to read, I figure it's a better use of my time reading fics I want to rather than those I have a big problem with.

20.5 pretty much is a clopfic, but I read it for the character interactions (no seriously, that's the only reason I read shippy stuff. I can't stomach pure fluff, I need to see characters grow!!). Pip explaining why she was interested in Homage was both funny and cute, but Homage's reasoning was tragic, and the story concludes with a defiant declaration that cemented Pip in my mind as a hero. "GOODNESS IS NOT A F***ING BLIGHT!" Manly tears, every time.

Calamity and Velvet's relationship happens off-screen for the most part, since LittlePip isn't present for most of it. So you have to fill in the blanks a bit. Like I said before, my money is on them finding equal ground when they were dealing with LittlePip's drug problem.

Yeah, Dangerous Business is such a fantastic fic too, it's like the perfect adventure story. It really is just epic, everything works so smoothly and even though you can clearly see where the Checkov's guns are being set up, it only makes you relish the moments when they are fired. Seeing Rarity and Rainbow bond is great as well.

When you're finished, be sure to check out another story in the same continuation called "A Day for Twilight and Spike", or something along those lines. It has one of the most touching conclusions I've read in a long while. There'll also be more fics in the same continuity, too, so that's something to look forward to.

Anyway. Love works the same emotionally be it hetro or homosexual. If you argue that, biochemically speaking, it's just a mutation that causes this misfire of neurons, remember that every single person is slightly mutated compared to their parentage. If we did not experience these perfectly natural mutations, every single human being would look nearly identical to one another.

Also his grimdark description just seemed like shock value, alot of it felt unnecessary to me. It's a shame, because every bugger I talked to about fanfics reccomended it to me.
